Evacuations Ordered, Florida Hurricane Ian on Path, Florida warned to brace for ‘major disaster’

On a course to make a major storm landfall on Florida’s west coast as early as Wednesday, Hurricane Ian was intensifying as it made its way toward Cuba. A significant hurricane named Ian was predicted to make landfall on the western tip of Cuba before intensifying into a Category 4 storm with top winds of 140 mph (225 km/h) over the warm Gulf of Mexico before making landfall in Florida.

Central West Florida is projected to receive 8 to 15 inches of rain from the hurricane, while the remainder of the Florida Peninsula will receive 3 to 8 inches and the Keys will receive 4 to 6 inches. Through midweek, the storm could generate flash flooding and urban flooding in central Florida, the Florida Keys, and the peninsula.

According to the National Hurricane Center, by late Monday, the storm had maximum sustained winds of 105 mph and higher gusts and was located in the western Caribbean Sea about 105 miles southeast of Cuba’s western point.

President Biden declared an emergency

Before Hurricane Ian makes landfall, President Joe Biden has declared an emergency, empowering the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Department of Homeland Security to organize disaster relief efforts and offer support to safeguard people and property.

Due of the storm, the president canceled a planned trip to Florida for Tuesday.

Warning of hurricane Ian

A hurricane Ian watch was issued along Florida’s west coast from north of Englewood to the Anclote River, including Tampa Bay, while a hurricane warning is in effect for the Cuban provinces of Isla de la Juventud, Pinar del Ro, and Artemisia.

Florida people were getting ready, removing bottles of water off shop shelves and standing in long lines in Tampa to collect bags of sand. At a news conference on Monday on preparations, county administrator Bonnie Wise stated that up to 300,000 people may need to be evacuated from low-lying areas in Hillsborough County alone.

Tennessee Deploys Troops

To assist with the Hurricane Ian response, Tennessee will send employees to Florida.

Gov. Bill Lee announced on Twitter on Monday that more than 1,200 Tennessee National Guard members and emergency personnel will be traveling to the south.

Florida Power & Light, Disruptions or Damage

Florida Power & Light declared that it was deploying staff to be ready to react swiftly to any disruptions or damage brought on by Hurricane Ian.

The utility claimed to have 13,000 workers ready to be deployed throughout the state for an immediate restoration of energy.
